San Juan Chickens

San Juan Chickens

Music by: Frances Tompkins

Inception:

It started as a rhythmic jazz piano improvisation. We recorded it with zoned-in percussionist Babatunde Lea. Early the next morning Tim and I walked around our town, old San Juan Bautista, and recorded lots of chickens and little birdies that we later put into the mix. Babatunde has a great solo, which was interrupted by Tim’s cello and my piano. I said, “Take out the cello and piano.” Tim said, “You can’t do that.”
“Yes I can.” And did.  [Frances]
